Daniil Medvedev won the US Open last year. Carlos Alcaraz will lead Spain against Novak Djokovic's Serbia next month in the Davis Cup group stage after Rafael Nadal was not named in Spain's squad on Monday.

Nadal is set to return to competition this week at the hard-court tournament in Cincinnati after an abdominal injury forced the 22-time Grand Slam champion to withdraw from Wimbledon ahead of the semi-finals.

The injury also kept him out of this month's event in Montreal, another hard-court warm-up event before the US Open, which starts in New York on August 29.

Spain and Serbia also play Canada and South Korea in Valencia, one of four European cities to host the group stage from September 13-18. Other cities are Bologna, Hamburg and Glasgow.

Former world number one Andy Murray will play at the tournament for the first time since 2019 after being named in the Great Britain squad to face the USA, Kazakhstan and the Netherlands in Scotland.

Second-ranked Alexander Zverov, who underwent surgery to repair torn ligaments in his right ankle in June, will lead the German team in Hamburg against France, Belgium and Australia.

2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic will lead Croatia against Italy, Argentina and Sweden in Bologna.

The top two teams from each group advance to the knockout stage in Malaga on November 22-27.
